1789 – Birth of Richard Rose

In 1789, Richard Rose was born in Sturminster Newton, Dorset, England. He was the 5th child (4th surviving) of Thomas Rose (1754-1833) and Jane Topp (1757-1827).

1792 – Richard Traveled from England to Australia with his Parents and 3 Siblings

On 8 August 1792, Thomas, Jane, and their children Thomas (Junior), Mary, Joshua and Richard departed Gravesend, England onboard the ship The Bellona.

On 18 October 1792, the Bellona arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

1793 – Thomas, Jane and 4 Children Arrived in Sydney, Australia

On 16 January 1793, Thomas, Jane and their children arrived in Australia onboard the ship the Bellona.

Thomas and his family briefly settled in the Strathfield-Homebush District, before moving to Prospect for about 12 years. 

1809 – Thomas Bought Land at Wilberforce, NSW

In 1809, Thomas bought land at Wilberforce, and around 1811 he built ‘Rose cottage’, Australia’s oldest known timber slab house in it’s original location.

1811 – Thomas and Jane built Rose Cottage

In 1811, Thomas and Jane built the house which is known today as “Rose Cottage” in Wilberforce. This is recognised as Australia’s oldest timber slab house at its original location.

1817 – Marriage of Richard Rose to Susannah Cross

On 18 August 1817, Richard Rose married a widow named Susannah Cross nee Richardson at St Matthews in Windsor, New South Wales, Australia.

According to the newspaper The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate published 3 December 1928, Richard and Susannah had 7 children: “Richard, who was married to Miss Jane Gardiner; Jane, who died at the age of 13 years; James, Henry, Susannah, Elizabeth and Izetta.”[8]

However, a search of the New South Wales Births, Deaths and Marriages database has also located Thomas Rose, born in 1820, and Mary A Rose, born in 1825 (the twin of Henry).

1872 – Death of Richard Rose

On 29 October 1872, Richard Rose died in Scone, New South Wales. (NSW BDM Death Certificate Registration Number 6555/1872).

On 31 October 1872, Rose was buried at Scone, NSW, Australia.

A memorial tombstone at Wilberforce Cemetery states:

“IN REMEMBRANCE OF RICHARD ROSE BORN 1789 DORSET ENGLAND DIED 29-10-1872 AT SCONE N.S.W.

HENRY ROSE BORN 1797 LIBERTY PLAINS AUST DIED 24-12-1849 AT WARIALDA N.S.W.

SONS OF THOMAS AND JANE ROSE BROTHERS OF THE ABOVE JOHN ROSE

NO KNOWN BURIAL PLOTS.”
